Wayne D. Purcell |
Wayne Purcell joined the faculty in 1978. His interests include price analysis, marketing systems, futures and options markets for price risk management and price discovery, and public policy as it influences effectiveness of marketing systems, market regulation, and market concentration. Current research concentrates on the impacts of concentration on prices paid for livestock, price discovery, the performance and efficiency of livestock and meat markets, demand for meats, price risk management strategies for livestock and grains, and the competitive position of Virginia’s agricultural and rural sectors. Professor Purcell is director of the Research Institute on Livestock Pricing, which he created in 1986. The Institute is financed by public and private grants and conducts research at Virginia Tech and helps finance research at other land-grant universities.
He is also coordinator of the department’s Rural Economic Analysis Program. He expresses “intense interest” in facilitating the applied orientation of research and policy activities.
Professor Purcell teaches undergraduate courses in microeconomic theory, marketing agricultural products, and futures and price analysis. He is a sports fan and basketball coach, operates a stocker cattle program, and likes to read.
Professor Purcell has received two AAEA awards for Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching (in 1973 and 1991) and numerous other teaching awards including the University Sporn Award for excellence in introductory classes in 1981, the first recipient in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. He was selected as a SCHEV winner of Outstanding Virginia Faculty in 2000 and received a Panhellenic Council teaching award in 2003. Dr. Purcell received the prestigious “Man of the Year in Virginia Agriculture” award from Progressive Farmer for 2002. He received the 1993 Distinguished Service Award from the American Farm Bureau Federation and was presented the 1997 Distinguished Support Award from the National Market News Association.
