About Us: Project Members
Virginia Tech:
George Norton - Co-Project Director; economist with expertise in assessing impacts of agricultural technologies, including multidisciplinary projects that have included a biotechnology component. Primary role: Co-lead the research and serve as the Director of the management entity, providing coordination across all components and institutions involved in the project.

Bradford Mills - Co-Project Director; economist with expertise in assessing impacts of agricultural technologies domestically and abroad. Primary role: Co-lead the economics research and participatory evaluation components

Jonathan Nevitt - Project Coordinator; statistician with expertise in the measurement of behavioral constructs and methods for social science modeling. Primary role: Project management, stake holder perception modeling, data management, project liaison to stakeholders and academic community.

Dixie Reaves - Co-Principal Investigator; economist with agribusiness expertise. Primary role: Extension and university teaching. Liaison between commodity experts outside of Virginia.

Mike Ellerbrock - Co-Principal Investigator; economist specializing in economic education. Primary role: Primary and secondary education about the benefits and costs of biotechnology.

Colette Harris - Co-Principal Investigator; specializes in gender, community participatory
techniques, and international development. Primary role: developing understanding of political issues involved with policies and regulations related to biotechnology. Overseas stakeholder assessments.

Carole Cramer - Advisor to the project on technical issues with respect to biotechnology on tobacco and liaison to rice biotechnology experts. Biotechnology scientist on the cutting edge of fundamental research to discover new pharmaceutical uses for tobacco.

S.K. DeDatta - Advisor to the project on technical issues related to rice. 27 years of experience as a principal scientist at the International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines.

Virginia State University:
Albert Essel - Co-Principal Investigator; economist. Primary role: Extension efforts on biotechnology issues among limited resource farmers, especially minority tobacco producers in Virginia.

University of Tennessee:
Kelly Tiller -- Co-Principal Investigator; agricultural policy analyst specializing in tobacco industry and the communities affected by that industry. Primary role: Research and extension efforts on the project in Tennessee.

North Carolina State University:
Gary Bullen -- Co-Principal Investigator; economist working closely with tobacco producers in North Carolina. Primary role: Extension efforts in North Carolina.

International Rice Research Institute (IRRI):
Mahabub Hossain - Co-Principal Investigator; head of the Social Science Unit in IRRI, which addresses issues related to rice R&D impact assessment and technology adoption. Primary role: Social and economic impacts of rice biotechnology in Asia.

K. L. Heong - Co-Principal Investigator; biological scientist specializing in ecological and social impacts of technologies at IRRI, especially as they relate to pest management. Primary role: Participatory assessment, focus group activities, and survey work for rice biotechnology in Asia.

International Food Policy Research Institute:
Joel Cohen
- Advisor to the project; heads the Program for Biosafety Systems at IFPRI and can provide a linkage to a wide range of international scientists in the biotechnology community.
