Survey Results: Social Concern Domains

Survey respondents were queried regarding whether or not they hold concerns under the following social domains: impact on human health, environmental consequences, private sector ownership of the technologies, and general moral/ethical issues. The tables below summarize the response breakdowns within each of these domains. Data were analyzed separately by technology application (rice, tobacco), with frequencies further broken down by gender.

Overall, more respondents expressed concerns associated with GMO rice headed for the food chain as compared to pharmaceutical-producing transgenic tobacco. And, more respondents were concerned about GMOs negatively affecting human health than they were for the other concern domains. Concern over environmental issues followed health concerns in prevalence, while moral/ethical issues appeared to be the least weighty on the minds of the respondents. Females seemed to be least familiar with issues involving corporate ownership of the technologies, as indicated by their frequency of don't know (DK) responses; males appear to be least certain of their feelings toward environmental impacts.

Within each crop, response patterns for males differ significantly from those exhibited by females (with the exception of moral/ethical issues under tobacco). Across the board, greater percentages of females indicated that they hold concerns, regardless of application type or concern domain. Moreover, greater percentages of females generally indicated that they did not know if they hold a concern in that domain as compared to male respondents.
